Fall is a great time to start you worm project. Your worms have all winter to build their population and produce castings. When spring arrives you’ll have an abundant amount of worms for fishing or gardening as well as vermicompost for your garden.
Here at wormyworms.com we sell true red worms (Eisenia foetida) which are the worm of choice for fishing and composting. These guys are prolific producing up to seven egg capsules per week. They also grow rapidly reaching maturity in 45 – 90 days. This means that you can produce a large number of worms in a short period of time.
If you decide to raise your worms outdoors we suggest that you bed them in for winter by placing a thick layer of hay over top of the bed. In severely cold climates you may want to dig your bed into the ground below the frost line to prevent freezing. For those keeping their worms indoors just make sure that the bin/bed remains above freezing. In short, frozen worms are dead worms. None of us want that to happen!
Enjoy your worms and if you have any question please feel free to contact us!
